Ainaloo Protected Area

Ainaloo Protected Area is located in Khoda Afarin County in Kalibar city of East Azerbaijan province.

This mountainous and green area, which is located at an altitude of 1500 meters above sea level, extends from the north of Qosha Dagh mountain in the south of Ahar to Aras River. Ainaloo tourism area is part of the beautiful forests of Arasbaran. In 1976, about 73 hectares of land in this area were registered as a biosphere reserve in the UNESCO list. The area is covered with forests, steppes and other vegetation. The forests of the Ainaloo Protected Area, in addition to the great diversity of plants, have rare species of mammals and birds. Its vegetation includes oak, walnut, yew, maple, wild cherry, juniper, hawthorn, pomegranate, etc.

This region was chosen to revive the Caspian Maral or deer due to having suitable vegetation and forests. At the beginning, a wire fence was erected by about 5 hectares of forest area by the Environmental Protection Organization and turned into a research site. Seven numbers of Maral were transferred from Golestan protection site to this protected area of Arasbaran. After the increase in the population of these deer, the area of this area increased to 180 hectares and now this site has more than 26 Marals. Part of this protected area is dedicated to public viewing of Marals.
