Arg-e Alishah

Arg-e Alishah, which is about seven hundred years old, is one of the oldest and tallest historical walls in Iran with about 26 meters high.

The original construction of the citadel dates back to the eighth century, when it was built by the order of Tajuddin Alisha Gilani, Minister of the Ilkhanate. As it is known, a large building was first created with the initial purpose of building a mosque, which remained unfinished. Then in the following years, a military fortress, which was used as a military fort, ammunition and grain storage for years, was built by using the walls left from this mosque. During Qajar period, with the beginning of Iran-Russia wars and Iran-Britain war, a barrack, a war headquarter for the Iranian army and a factory were built in the area of Arg-e Alishah under the command of Abbas Mirza, the Qajar crown prince. The pavilion mansion was also added to the area during Qajar period. Over time, the buildings in this complex were destroyed for various reasons, including the occupation of Tabriz by Russian forces, earthquakes, etc. Today, only the southern wall of the citadel has remained, which is open to tourists and travelers during the day. Mortar and stone materials have been used to build Arg-e Alishah in Tabriz, which is one of the masterpieces of Iranian architecture. According to experts, about 7 meters of each wall of the citadel is under the ground. Arg-e Alishah in Tabriz and its ancient site have been inscribed on the list of national monuments of Iran on January 6, 1961 with the number 170.
