Se-Gonbad Tomb Tower

Se-Gonbad Tomb Tower

Se-Gonbad Tower is one of the memorial towers located in the southeast of Urmia, the capital of West Azerbaijan province. This tower is one of the most significant tourist attractions of Urmia, which you can visit with the tours of Persian trips Tourism group.

According to the brick inscription of the building, the tower belongs to the sixth century AH and its founder was a person named Sheyth Qateh Al-Muzaffari, one of the rulers and elders of the Seljuk period. According to a number of experts and researchers, this building was built on the site of an old fire temple; however, so far no valid proof has been found in this regard. Some archaeologists believe that in the past there were two other buildings around the tower, which were collectively called Se-Gonbad (Three Domes).

Se-Gonbad Tower of Urmia was introduced in 1852 by the Russian anthropologist Nikolai Khanikov. The historical significance and architecture of this valuable historical building caused it to be included on the list of national monuments of Iran on 7 December 1935 with registration number 242.

The Architecture of Se-Gonbad Tower

The architecture of Se-Gonbad Tower in Urmia, West Azerbaijan Province, is comparable to other surviving buildings from Seljuk period and is very similar to the mausoleum tower in the city of Maragheh in East Azerbaijan Province. The tower, which is built on a tall, cylindrical platform, is 13 meters high and 5 meters in diameter. The main and external plan of the tower is circular and its front part is in the form of a rectangular frame, full of patterns on the cylindrical body of the tower. The lower part of the building is made of gray stones that extend to a height of more than six meters. The materials used in the upper part of the building are also made of rectangular bricks.

The decorations at the entrance of the tomb are unique in their kind and are made using materials such as stone and plaster, these arrays consist of geometric patterns and inscriptions in Kufic script, and valves for receiving light and air flow are also installed on all 4 sides of the tower. Se-Gonbad Tower consists of two floors, the first floor of which is used as a catacomb and is separated from the second floor by an arched cover. The second floor is the tomb room, the entrance of which is 2.5 meters high through a door. The interior form of the tower and the tomb room is square. Moqarnas and beautiful arches used in this room are among the decorations used in the building.
