The Tomb of Seyyed Sadr al-Din

The Tomb of Seyyed Sadr al-Din, dating back to Safavid period, is located in the beautiful suburbs of Chaldoran, between the village of Gol-e-Ashaghi and Sadal in West Azerbaijan.

This tomb is a symbol of courage and patriotism; a symbol which was made to commemorate the memory of 27,000 martyrs killed in Chaldoran war. This historical tomb is inspired by the original architecture of Iran, using red bricks and stone. Situated in a beautiful wide plain, the tomb of Seyyed Sadr al-Din has been built as a hexagonal building; a high and beautiful porch of the tomb is built on the south side with decorations such as moqarnas, brickwork and framing, with stone, lime and mud mortar as materials. The mausoleum was originally built with a simple gable roof, but Cultural Heritage Organization added the brick dome while preserving the architecture of the building due to the high respect people have for Seyyed Sadr al-Din. Exterior, symmetry and cladding are some of the beauties of this building, and a statue of King Ismail made of fiberglass and concrete has added to the beauty of this monument.

The architecture of Seyyed Sadr al-Din's Tomb

The foundation of the tomb is built on a stone sleeper wall, which is circular from inside and hexagonal on the outside, and a decorative plinth has been created in the upper part of the sleeper wall in order to beautify it. Unfortunately, the rise of the groundwater surface had caused the foundations and graves belonging to the martyrs to sink into the water. The materials used in the tomb of Seyyed Sadr al-Din are made of three main materials including stone, mud mortar and lime, while the used carved stones, which are mostly white, are acidic volcanic type, belonging to the Quaternary era. The tomb of Seyyed Sadr al-Din is comparable to the building of Sheikh Heydar in the form of stone sleeper wall, facade stones and the use of sand and lime mortar. After conducting archeological studies and reviewing historical texts, a domed brick monument was built in 1999 to honor the martyrs of the historical epic of Chaldoran. In the outer and lower part of the building, cut white stones have been used; in the upper part of the tomb of Seyyed Sadr al-Din, decorative rooms with gabled arches can be seen. At the entrance of the tomb, the statue of Shah Ismail I made of fiberglass and concrete in bronze color is standing at a height of 5.3 meters. This building was registered on the list of national monuments in 2000.
