Imam Hasan Basri mosque in Siraf

Imam Hasan Basri mosque in Siraf

The remains of Imam Hassan Basri Siraf Mosque are located on a small hill in Siraf port of Bushehr province. This hill overlooks the flower garden of the martyrs of Bandar Siraf and the surrounding landscapes.

Imam Hassan Basri Siraf Mosque was built in the 7th and 8th centuries AH and there is a cemetery in front of it. The mosque is almost square in shape with dimensions of about 15 x 16 meters. According to the researches, it has been determined that this structure is built on the ruins of a Sassanid fortress. Remains of water reservoirs, stables, etc. have been discovered under the mosque. The nave of the mosque, which can be reached through its porch, has plastering decorations. In the central arch on the qibla side, there is a small altar which is decorated with the art of plastering. On the southwest side of the mosque there is a rectangular room and on the north side there are a number of narrow and small rooms. There is only one propylaeum left of this mosque, which is made of stone, plaster and brickwork. At the eastern end of the remains of this structure, a room made of stone and mortar with two minarets has been destroyed and the bottom of the columns which are like towers remained. Some locals in Bandar Siraf attribute the mosque to Imam Hassan Basri, a Sunni scholar, and believe that Imam Hassan Basri, who lived in the time of Imam Ali, was the imam of the mosque, while David Whitehouse, the head of the excavation committee of Iran and Britain considers this building as one of the buildings of the Ilkhanate era. Imam Hassan Basri Mosque of Bushehr province has been registered in the list of national monuments on September 7, 2008 with the number 23334.
