Shiraz Eram Garden
Shiraz Eram Garden is one of the most beautiful Persian gardens in the northwest of Shiraz. It is located in Eram Street and it is bounded to Danesjou Boulevard.Shiraz Eram Garden’s area is about 110380square meters and 1869 square meters substructure.
History of Shiraz Eram Garden
Historians consider the History of Shiraz Eram Garden to be built in the fifth AH. (Around reign of Atabak Qaracheh Seljuk)Some of the Hafez researchers and historians cite Hafez’ sonnets which are written about Shah Sheikh Abo-Eshagh. Based on those eulogies, this garden is related to him and was flourished in that period.In Timurid Empire, Timur was influenced by this mansion and build a garden in Samarkand. There is no specific information about the garden in Safavid, Afshar, and Zand dynast.In late Zand and early Qajar dynasty, the leaders of the Qashqai tribe chose this garden as the headquarter of their tribe and the first building of this garden was built during the reign of Jani Khan.In Nasser al-Din Shah Reign, Haj Hassan Ali Khan Nasir al-Mulk, one of the elders of Shiraz, bought this garden from the leaders of Qashqai tribe and construct this elegant building. According to Forsat al-Dawla in Ajam's works, Haji Mohammad Hassan, an architect who was one of the prominent architects of his time, played a major role in the construction of this building.
Shiraz Eram Garden description
In this garden, there are very tall cypress trees planted on both sides of the garden. There are also pine trees, citrus and rose bushes.It is told that there are more than three hundred species, in this garden.Behind the main mansion and in the western part of the garden, there is an Andaruni (Harem) mansion, which in the past was the residence of the family and close people to the king. The inner door now opens towards Golestan Rose Garden.The Andaruni section of the building is beautifully decorated and the yard is planted with trees and flowers and there is also a waterfront in the area. Eram Garden also has a bathhouse related to the Qajar period that includes khazineh, bineh, noorkhaneh and garmkhaneh.The space of this bath was filled and turned into a guard post. Currently, the space of this bathroom has been renovated according to the original plan. There is another old door at the east corner of the garden which was built in 1897. The old propylaeum had brickwork and at there are a marble inscription at the top and two tiled inscriptions on both sides.It is written on the marble inscription in Nastaliq (calligraphic hands used in writing the Persian alphabet): “From king Nasir al-molk’s minister: may Eram garden be always prosperous” the date 1920 is written next to it. Now this garden is dedicated to Shiraz University and is utilized as a botanical garden and is known as one of the tourism attraction in Shiraz. This garden has been registered in national monument list on 5 November 1974 (no 1013). Shiraz Eram garden is one of nine Persian gardens which were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in2011.
The main mansion of Eram Garden
The most interesting section of the garden is the central mansion. The mansion has been built in three floors which are decorated by paintings tiling and plastering. The architecture of the building is based on Qajar architecture and is an imitation of Zandi style. The mansion is one of the masterpieces of that period. On the second floor of the building there is a large porch with two tall columns and on both sides of this porch, two smaller porches can be seen. The paintings of Ferdowsi’s Shahname and Qajar’s kings’ battle are installed on the top of the building and gives a spectacular view to it. In front of the main building, which overlooks the garden, there is a large pool with an area of 335 square meters in which the reflection of the mansion appears.Shiraz Eram Garden is counted as one of the most important historical and recreational attractions which lots of tourists have visited it.
