Hamedan Tomb of Esther and Mordekhai

Hamedan Tomb of Esther and Mordekhai is one of the most important shrines of Judaism. This tomb is located in Shariati Street, Hamedan, which is one of the most original and oldest streets in the city.

This area has been inhabited by the Jews of Hamedan in the past and the existence of this shrine has continued this issue. The tomb of Esther and Mordekhai in Hamedan has two tombs. Regarding the identity of the buried of this tomb, various theories have been presented. The more common theory is that the southern tomb belongs to Esther Jewish wife of Khashayar shah. The other tomb also belongs to Esther's uncle Mordekhai. Since the Jews believe that the lineage of Esther and Mordecai goes back to Hazrat Yaqub through 15 intermediaries, the tomb of Esther and Mordekhai in Hamedan is the second most important Jewish shrine in Iran and in the world after Jerusalem. The Jews try to be present during their special celebration, which takes place in mid-March and early April. Others believe that Esther is the goddess Esther and Mordekhai is the Marduk god of Babylon, and this place was the place of worship of these two goddesses. The architectural style of the building and the presence of the dome are reminiscent of Iranian Islamic architecture. According to the existing theories, the dome of the building was built in the eighth century AH on the ruins remained from 2500 years ago. The inlaid box of Mordechai tomb dates back to 1300 and it is made of ebony wood. The tomb of Esther is also inlaid and is older than the tomb of Mordekhai. Fortunately, the fire in the tomb of Esther and Mordekhai, which took place in this building in May 2019, was not damaged.
