Different sections of Sultan Amir Ahmad Bathhouse

The architecture of this historical bathhouse is very special and eye-catching. This space is built below the ground level to maintain its internal heat, a technique that helps to retain heat and save energy.

Sultan Amir Ahmad Bathhouse includes different sections like Garmkhaneh, Sarbineh, Khazineh, etc. Sarbineh is the first space in the bathhouses, used as a dressing room or a place for people to talk and meet each other; Sarbineh is a large octagonal hall with a large octagonal pool in the center; eight columns separate the seating area from the middle and main space. Garmkhaneh or Warm House, which houses Khazineh, is the main space for washing; furthermore, these two spaces are connected by a corridor called Miandar that has many twists and turns, with the aim of controlling the heat and humidity between these two spaces. Water is supplied by two wells in this bathhouse, and clay pipes were used to carry water between different sections.

Researchers have been able to identify 17 layers of restoration in this building, which indicates the antiquity of the building. Arched ceilings, mosaics and paintings that have beautifully adorned this building, mark one of the architectural masterpieces and the peak of Iranian taste in ancient times. Seven-layer plastering and turquoise and gold tiles have made the bathhouse of Kashan Sultan Ahmad one of the most amazing buildings in Iran. The rooftop of this bathhouse consists of several domes on which convex glass is used to provide light for the bath.

The History of Sultan Amir Ahmad Bathhouse

Sultan Amir Ahmad Bathhouse is a 16th-century public bathhouse built during the Safavid dynasty. Although making bathhouses was also common before the advent of Islam in Iran, bathhouses have become an integral part of Iranian life after the promotion of Islam in Iran since ablution is a religious obligation in Islam. At that time, mosques, bazaars, houses, water reservoirs and bathhouses were among the five main urban structures in Islamic cities. The same number of bathhouses and mosques indicated the importance of bathhouses.
