Meymand Rocky Village

Meymand village

Meymand, which is known as one of the first human settlements in Iran, is a village dug into rock dating back to at least two to three thousand years ago. Regarding the etymology, Meymand consists of two words: Mey (wine) and mand (drunk).

One of the special features of this historical village is the close connection between life and the surrounding nature. The advancement of technology has had the least intrusion in nature, so this village continues to live by preserving many valuable features. In the historic village of Meymand, an entire house is called a "kicheh"; the house is dug in the rock and may contain one or more rooms as well as stables. Meymand village is in fact an ancient region that has historical monuments such as temples, scattered rock houses, towers and castles.

With an area of about 420 km, this village is also known as the hand-dug village of Meymand due to the presence of many rocks in its mountains dug by humans. In Meymand village, the structure, size and number of rooms are not the same. In these houses, the rooms are separated from “Pastoo” (the inner room) with a cloth curtain and some niches are also covered with these curtains. Meymand Bathhouse, which has a Khazineh like traditional bathhouses, is one of the wonders of these houses, with hygienic issues observed in it. There are other places such as mosque, school, Hosseiniyeh and guest house in this historical village. The inhabitants of this village have special customs and Sassanid Pahlavi words are still used in their language and dialect. The people of Meymand live in the lower plains of Meymand in the spring to take care of livestock, and stay in the surrounding villages and gardens and farms in the summer; they spend the winter in this rocky village. These houses are cool in the summer and warm in the winter due to their architecture.
