Nashtifan Ancient Windmills

Nashtifan windmills, which are remnants of the Safavid period, are the largest and oldest collection of windmills in the world, made of clay, mud and wood; these windmills consist of 48 wings, 32 blades, 8 doors, and wooden wheels and blades.

Since windmills played an essential and valuable role in the lifestyle and subsistence of the local people in the past, they resulted in the economic prosperity of this region. Due to its special architecture, this historical complex is considered as one of the important tourist attractions of Razavi Khorasan Province, which attracts hundreds of foreign and domestic tourists annually. It should be noted that the mills usually do not have special decorations due to the function they had.

Features of Nashtifan Windmills

The structure of Nashtifan windmills, which are built of clay and mud, consists of two parts. The ground floor houses the main hall, which is rectangular in shape; with an area of 30 square meters, this hall faces the wind. In addition, windmills equipment including millstone is located in this part. There is a blade on the upper floor.

As the wind begins to blow, the wind passes through the eight doors of the windmill and reaches the wheels and blades, which make the wheels move. As the beam rotates around the large rock, the moving rock spins, and thus the wheat or other grains are ground by the friction of these two rocks; the result would be the production of the flour. The rotation of these winds depends on the strong and continuous 120-day winds of Sistan that blow in different parts of Khorasan, especially from Khaf to Nehbandan. The warehouse that was used to store wheat and grains is another part of this structure. The other important and creative element used in the architecture of these windmills is a canal that directs the air into the ground floor and helps the miller to separate the straw from the wheat.
