Golestan Palace Complex

With an area of 4.5 hectares (one tenth of the original area), Golestan Palace is located in the old region of Tehran as a fabulous member of this city in close proximity to the National Museum and Mashgh Square. Golestan Palace is one of UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Iran, which is an ideal place for photographing and capturing extremely beautiful images thanks to its unique architecture and decorations. This valuable monument was registered on the list of national monuments of Iran in 1995 and on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2013. In addition, the occurrence of important historical events in this palace has made it a living document of Iranian history.

Features of Golestan Palace

The name of this palace is taken from Golestan Hall. The construction of this complex began in the Safavid era, which enhances the importance of Golestan Palace. During the reign of Safavid king (Shah Abbas I), Chaharbagh and a garden filled with plane trees were built in its northern part with a royal mansion. In Qajar dynasty, this palace was widely expanded and became the residential building of Qajar kings. During the first Pahlavi period, large parts of the citadel of Tehran, including the fence around it, the entrance of Bab Aali, the gallery, Takyeh Dowlat, Narenjestan, Golshan Garden and Andaruni were destroyed; only this palace, which was used for official ceremonies and residence of presidents and special foreign guests, was left.

The oldest buildings in the Golestan complex are Karimkhani Marble Throne and Khalvat-e karim khani. Among the buildings that existed in Golestan Palace in the past, we can mention Andaruni Mansion, Naseri Dormitory, Khaqan Hall, Sandogh khaneh (the closet mansion) and the royal dressing room. At present, buildings such as Marble Throne, Khalvat-e Karim Khani, Salam Hall, Mirror Hall, Ivory Hall or Dining Room, Diamond Hall, Library Building, Shams Al-Amara Mansion, Badgir (wind catcher) Mansion, a large Pool House, Abyaz Palace with a variety of styles and the most beautiful architectural decorations can be seen in this palace. The different parts of the palace have been turned into anthropological museums.
