Lariha House

The city of Yazd has long been known as one of the important areas in Iran's trade. Because it is considered the middle point between Khorasan and some southern and central regions of Iran

and various caravans and merchants passed through it. This feature is not only related to ancient Iran or the early Islamic era, but it exists even today. For this reason, Yazd has a special duality in all urban characteristics; Both traditional and modern texture, new market and old market, European urban architecture as well as Iranian-Islamic architecture.

The passage of various merchants and the commercial prosperity of Yazd have caused rich families and businessmen from different cities of Iran to come to this city and settle in it. Therefore, in many parts of Yazd, the houses of merchants from other cities have remained, which today have become important tourist destinations of the historical city of Yazd. One of the most important of them, which is very interesting both in terms of architecture and usage, is named Lariha House, which is located in Fahaadaan.

Let's go and visit the charming and traditional neighborhood of Fahaadaan in the heart of Yazd.

Interesting history of Lariha House:

About 270 years ago, Fars province had a proper situation due to the prosperity of Shiraz and maritime trade, and the cities of this province housed many rich people. The city of Lar was not exempted from this rule and the rich people there moved to Yazd to invest in trade with India and settled in Fahaadaan. After dozens of years of business, one of these migrant lari built a house in Fahaadaan (150 years ago) which was considered one of the best houses in Yazd in terms of architecture and beauty. It became known as the Lariha House (meaning the house of people belonging to the city of Lar). This 150-year-old house was still in the possession of the Laris until the end of the Pahlavi period, but it suffered from inheritance problems and the house remained abandoned until after the Islamic revolution it was bought by the government and reopened as a museum for the public to visit, and it was also registered in the Iran National Heritage List. Today, this house has been restored and is considered one of the strongest, most beautiful and tourist-friendly buildings in Yazd.

What do you know about the architecture of Lariha house?

The whole house has an area of 1700 square meters and the infrastructure includes 1200 square meters. Since Iranians used to live as families and no one was separated from their main family, the house is divided into three different parts, each part has its own yard. Both the main entrance of the whole house and the entrance of each yard have been designed in such a way that there is no view from the outside of the house to the inside so that the people of the house were comfortable. In Iranian architecture, this way is called *Hijab of building*.Due to the desert nature of Yazd, inside the main courtyard, a large porch of the house, facing a large pond, has been built to cool the interior space along with the Windcatcher of the house. In addition to that, other porches have also been built in a way to shade the yard and prevent direct sunlight. Of course, some rooms are not in the direction of the wind to stay warm in the cold seasons of the year. There is a cellar under the main porch. which can be reached by going down 38 steps. Around the courtyards, you can see many rooms, including the families been living in them, there are a total of 22 rooms that belonged to 6 different families.

The architecture of Lariha house is very eye-catching and upon entering this house, its many beauties such as doors and windows with colored glass attract the eyes of every viewer. Around the courtyard, we see rooms skillfully decorated with paintings and mirrors. Of course, one of these rooms is known as the *mirror room*, which has pictures and paintings embedded in it symmetrically. The ceiling of the rooms of Yazd's Lariha houses is made of wooden beams that are painted. It is interesting to know that each room has a specific use, for example, a three-door room for children and a five-door room for the family.

Lariha house also works as the Yazd Document Museum. Also, the location of this house in the center of the traditional neighborhood of Fahaadan, has made you put a lot of other historical buildings on your travel list after visiting this house. All these buildings are located in Fahadan neighborhood of Yazd and tell you their own story.Lariha House is not just a simple building. Rather, along with other historical places of Fahaadaan, they are living and telling history of Yazd city!!!
