Gugad citadel

One of the most beautiful citadels left in Isfahan province is “Gugad Stronghold or citadel”located in Golpayegan city. This unique citadel, which has been registered in Iran National Heritage List, is considered one of the most important Stronghold in Iran.

How was the Gugad citadel built and what is its use?

There is only one written document about the Gugad citadel, which is related to the early Zandiya and the late Qajar period. However, the newly discovered manuscript, as well as the material and architectural style of the citadel, probably date its construction back to the Timurid era. In addition, the location of the Stronghold on the Silk Road confirms this hypothesis. Because the Timurids had an international government and the Silk Road was located in most of their territory. Most of the Strongholds of the Silk Road (whether in Iran or other countries) had a dual purpose:

1-  In times of peace as a caravanserai for transiting caravans 2- In times of war and invasion of invaders to dominate the road, as a military fortress.Today, Gugad citadel has become a beautiful hotel for travelers and visitors. Of course, even if you are not a hotel guest, it is possible to visit the entire citadel.

Features of Gugad Stronghold:

Gugad Citadel is quadrangular in shape with four 12-meter guard towers at its 4 corners. The walls are made of red clay, which distinguishes it from other caravanserais. In the northern part of it is the royal mansion (used by the ruler) in front of which a pond is built between four gardens. In addition to cooling the air, this pond was also a source of water to extinguish the fire inside the Stronghold. The citadel is built on two floors, and for better defense of it, a very narrow path leads to the second floor. On the eastern side of the citadel, a well was dug to provide drinking water to the inhabitants in the event of a siege. Gouged citadel today has a traditional structure with a new application.
