Izad Khast Castle
Izad khast Castle is located in the north of Fars province, within the city of Abadeh on the Isfahan-Shiraz road. This castle is the first multi-storey building in the world, which was built with the basic materials of clay, mud, wood, etc.
The history of the castle according to the available documents dates back to the Sassanid era. The location of this castle on the way to Shiraz has attracted the attention of many foreign tourists such as Felanden and draw plans for it. It is located on a sedimentary rock next to the valley. The shape of the rock and the castle built on it from the northwest side looks like a big ship. The total area of the castle is about twenty thousand square meters, which according to available information, about five thousand people lived there. This castle was inhabited until 1881, after which the people left the castle and built a new city along the riverbed at the foot of the valley in the village of Izad khast.
Features of Izad Khast Castle
The interior design of Izad Khast Castle is a narrow path 2.5 meters wide that has been created in a north-south direction along the bridge. From this route, side alleys with short length and width are separated. The end of each alley ends in a rectangular area perpendicular to the side alley. Houses are located around these dead ends and alleys. The communication network inside the castle has been created in a calculated way due to the large number of residential units inside the castle, which has been very valuable and important in terms of defense. The only way to enter the castle is to the south, which is done by a narrow bridge. Due to the vertical walls of the rock and the valley and the moat that existed around the castle, the removal of this bridge limited the possibility of penetration and access to it.
One of the interesting works of the castle is the construction of its mosque. The mosque was built on the site of the Sassanid fire temple, which was one of the most famous fire temples in Persia. In other words, the four arches in the building have been changed by closing the eastern entrance to southern and western entrance. Other parts of the architecture of Izad khast Castle include its bath. According to the inscription in one of its columns, it is clear that the bath was built during the Safavid period and during the reign of Shah Sultan Hussein. This indicates that the castle of Izad khsat was in full bloom at that time.
